Colour INKspiration #36

It’s time for another awesome Colour INKspiration challenge.  We had some great entries for CI#35 with the Neutrals Collections.  You can find all the action on our Facebook page.

We’d love to see you join in challenge #36 which is this stunning colour palette of Crushed Curry, Soft Suede, Basic Gray & Silver.

You can also add any Basic – Whisper White, Very Vanilla & Basic Black and any metallic.

Yellow, gray, black & white together is one of my all-time favourite colour combinations.  The addition of a brown tone certainly made it interesting!!!

I played up the yellow & gray tones and added just a touch of Soft Suede.

Both of these cards using the same techniques & layout – I’ve just switched the colours, orientation & centrepiece to get two unique designs with minimal extra design effort.

This card features the butterfly from Springtime Impressions Thinlits, Tea Room & Nature’s Poem DSP and a wreath made from one of the little stamps in the Love What You Do stamp set.

I have left both cards without a sentiment for two reasons – one, it didn’t really fit the design and second is because I love sentiment-free cards!

I’ve used the Subtle Embossing Folder for both card bases – it just lifts a blank space without being overpowering.  Everyone needs to order this embossing folder!!

I love having DSP stacks back in the catalogue.  They are perfect for colour challenges because you always have the colour you need!!!  And the patterns this year are awesome – plain stripes and dots plus creative stripes & dots.

The centrepiece of each card features a perfect wreath.  I’d seen these shared on others projects, but had the chance to try out this technique recently when it was part of a class run by Mandy Depiazzi.

It uses a template and your stamparatus.  I’m not sure who came up with this idea first, but this youtube tutorial by Barb Stamps is a great explanation on how to make your template & create your wreath.

This is a close-up of the Crushed Curry wreath.  I’ve just stamped in all 8 positions using a 2-3/4″ square of Whisper White cardstock.

Stamp Review Crew | Animal Outing

Hello!  It’s a wonderful Stamp Review Crew Hop today -my international Stampin’ Up! friends and I are sharing projects made using Animal Outing.  You’re going to love this hop!!!

This stamp set is part of a bundle with the Animal Friends Thinlits.  It’s also part of a suite with Animal Expedition DSP & other coordinating products.  See the range in the catalogue – page 27, or browse online.

I’m sharing two projects today made with the Animal Outing stamp set.

The first was a team class project where I wanted to share reverse image stamping with my team.

The giraffe (and all the animals in in set) are perfect for this technique.  It adds extra dimension to the layout of a card – and means you can have animal friends looking at each other.

There’s 4 giraffes in the circle – two facing left and two facing right (although one is upside down, so technically three of them are looking right!).  The ones facing right were stamped as normal.  The ones facing left were stamped onto a silicone mat and then transferred onto the cardstock.

I’ve tried this technique before with Window Sheet – but you have to be so careful not to smudge the image as you transfer it.  Using the silicone sheet gives a much better image, but you can’t see through for placement – so it’s slightly trickier in that way.  I recommend doing the reverse image first, then lining up your other images.

Although I love the sentiments in the stamp set, the animals go so well with lots of other sentiments. For my quartet of giraffes, I liked the ‘from all of us’ saying from the Itty Bitty Greetings stamp set.

For my second card, I wanted to stamp the rhino onto DSP to see the effect.  I love the Animal Expedition DSP (I’ve used that for the gray panel) but had a pink rhino in my head, so went looking through the new DSP – and fell in love with the Tropical Escape DSP Stack.  Oh my, the patterns in this are amazing!!!

Add some embellishments and we have a cute & girly card.  I like the pink rhino – she’s fun!!!

In both cards I’ve used Stampin’ Write Markers to add open eyes to the animals.  I still need some practice, but I like the effect of the animals looking out from the card.

Who loves colour challenges???

The colours for this challenge are stunning with an awesome inspiration photo to get the creativity flowing – do I say this every week???

Three sweet colours – Bermuda Bay, Sweet Sugarplum & Lemon Lime Twist plus a solid neutral – Soft Suede.  You can add any other neutral or metallic to your project to complete your colour palette.  If you don’t have the exact Stampin’ Up! match, create with the closest you have.

My creation starts with a story…..

I have this amazing crafty friend.  She’ll play with any craft medium but sewing is where her passion & skill lies.  She makes the most amazing quilted artworks.  See some of her work on Instagram (click here).

We lives hours apart so don’t catch up as often as we’d like, but whenever she comes for a visit, she’s straight to my shelf of stamps checking out what’s new and suggesting all kind of crazy stamping combinations.  She sees the world in a totally different way to me – it’s wonderful!

She fell in love with the unicorn from the Magical Day stamp set and spent quite some time brainstorming a rainbow farting unicorn!

So, here you are Miss Caity…. this is your rainbow tooting unicorn…

I used the baby wipe technique with the Star of Light swirl to create the ‘rainbow farts’.

Making your own multi-coloured ink pad is a great way to get a variety of colour tones in your stamped image.

And those unicorns – don’t they look happy with themselves!

Did you spy that they are facing different ways?  The unicorn at the top is stamped exactly from the stamp set.

The unicorn at the bottom is a mirror image created using the reflection technique.

Simply stamp your image onto Window Sheet (acetate) and then press onto your cardstock.  I used Basic Gray Archival Ink.

This will give you an outline, which I then followed using my Soft Suede Stampin’ Write Marker.  To get the same effect on your ‘right way’ unicorn, stamp off the unicorn several times, then stamp onto your carstock and trace using the marker.  Stamping at full strength will make the colour too dark to effectively trace over.

To cut out the reverse unicorn using the framelit, hold it against a window and line up on the ‘wrong side’.  Hold it in place with some washi tape while you run it through the Big Shot.  Or you could just fussy cut…… your call!

PS….. I think our windows need a clean!

The unicorn comes up great – you can’t even tell it’s a reflection!

Use your Stampin’ Write Markers to colour the unicorn mane/tail.

I could have gone with any of the birthday (or other) sentiments in my stash, but I thought the ‘cue the confetti’ sentiment from the Picture Perfect Birthday stamp set was cute & cheeky for this card!

Colour INKspiration #25

Hello & welcome to the first Colour INKspiration hop for 2018!

It’s a good one with fresh & summery colours – Lemon Lime Twist, Whisper White & Night of Navy.

They say blue & green should never be seen, but this combo is dynamite!!!

I’ve used it to create a fresh & floral tropical birthday card using the toucan from the new Bird Banter stamp set.

This set was an all-attendee giveaway at the OnStage event in November 2017.  Like all great gifts, it was perfect for me – something awesome that I would have never have bought myself.  I wouldn’t normally add a bird set to my stash – but I love owning it!!!

I used lots of white in this card to keep it bright and used the Night of Navy and Lemon Lime Twist to add pops of colour.

As well as the Bird Banter stamp set, I used a couple of products from the Petal Passion Suite – one of the Petal Pair Embossing Folders and the leafy die from the Petals & More Thinlits..  I love how well all the products coordinate, even between sets & suites!

Love using banners on your card?  This is so easy to make with your Classic Label Punch.

Punch your shape as usual, then feed back through the side of the punch to snip off banner edges.

I carried through the theme to the inside and decorated using a couple of balloons and some colour themed washi tape.

It’s hard to photograph, but my clear Wink of Stella pen added some sparkle to the balloons & toucan.

At OnStage back in November 2017, we all received a new stamp set to take home as part of a giveaway called ‘Prize Patrol’.

I got this stunning set called Beautiful Day.

 

It’s a delight to stamp with!  The flower is pretty – but the butterfly…. oh my!!!

For this card, I heat embossed the butterfly in gold on vellum and coloured using Rich Razzleberry & Pink Pirouette Stampin’ Blends to create a stained glass effect.

Just Add Ink #387 | Colour Combination

With just over a month til the big day, Nikki is officially kicking off Christmas crafts with this Christmassy colour combination for our Just Add Ink challenge.

There’s nothing like red, green & white to get you in the Christmas mood!

Of course, there’s nothing limiting you to Christmas!  I’d love to see some amazing creations for other seasons.

I was unable to break out of the Christmas mold, and used one of my favourite new bundles – Musical Season.

All colour challenges have the option to add any neutral or metallic, so you’ll see some variation in the design team projects with the additional of these colours.

I’ve added in an embossed Crumb Cake base (using the Ruffled Embossing Folder), a little drummer boy in Archival Black and some (sadly retired) gold twine.

The Garden Green layer across the middle of the card is made by tearing some copy paper and using this to cover the top & bottom of the Whisper White cardstock.  I then coloured in Garden Green ink using my brayer and stamped the Sheet Music stamp over the top in Black Archival ink.

This technique is fun for a variety of cards, but I love that I can extend the music theme for this card.

I just can’t give it to someone too musical – no one that can actually read the music notes!!  I believe the Sheet Music stamp is the music for Fur Elise, which is not that Christmassy!!!

Happy Father’s Day 2017

It’s Father Day in Australia!

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads, father figures, Grandads, Dads-to-be, step-Dads & other amazing men around the world!

This is the card I made for my Dad using my favourite Large Letters Framelits – always a great option for a personalised card.

Turns out a tool card was the perfect option for Grandad Papercraft who helped me out yesterday with installing some new storage for my ever-growing stamping supplies.

I’m so excited to have easy access to all my favourites!

And look at all that space to fill!!!

Do you think Mr Papercraft needs some stamps for Father’s Day this year?

I won’t ask him – I don’t want to ruin the surprise!

 

Faux Woodgrain Technique

I had a list of things I wanted to accomplish during August and the Faux Woodgrain technique was one of them.

Several of my demonstrator friends have been showing their flashy cards on social media and they *promised* me it was the easiest technique ever!

Turns out… it is!

With the help of this great tutorial video by Carolyn Bennie, we used this technique during my August demonstrator class.

It uses Glossy White cardstock and ‘swipes’ of ink directly from your ink pad.  The best part is – no two pieces are ever going to look the same.

It was the perfect backdrop for the gorgeous ballerina from the new Sugarplum Dreams stamp set in the newly released Holiday Catalogue.

Having 2 girls, the ballerina was a ‘must have’ for me!!!

I’m also excited to play with the other stamps in this set, but the ballerina was the first Holiday Catalogue item I purchased and the first I used!

Also in August, I used it in a completely different colour scheme to make a more rich & regal card for a friend…

The sentiment that comes with the stamp set is gorgeous…

The theme for the CTC challenge this week is the Everyday Occasions section of the catalogue.

My card to share with you this week is a bit of a happy accident.

I was prepping for my monthly card class last week and so far the cards I’d designed were very ‘neutral’ is their colour schemes.

So, I turned to the catalogue for some bright & fun inspiration.

This photo on page 50 caught my eye…

And when I realised what section it was in – BINGO!  One project, two uses!!!

So, transforming the bag you see at the top into a card, this is what I ended up with…

Although Fresh Fig is a lovely colour, I can sometimes find it a little dark, so I’ve freshened this card up by using Rich Razzleberry cardstock & ink.

I couldn’t go past the Fresh Fig Sheer ribbon though – it’s a delightful new catalogue favourite that I am totally in love with!  And guess what?  It comes in 3 other colours!!!

While we’re talking ribbon, is bow tieing on your love or hate list???

I don’t mind a mini bow with thin ribbon, but I’m a hot mess with thick ribbon!!!

I did want to share something with you today.  When I was working a part-time job in retail during my university days, I gift wrapped countless packages and tieing oh-so-many ribbons.

Someone amazing (I can’t remember who), taught me this little ribbon trick for wrapping ribbon around your package – or card – so that the ribbon sits flat across the back and repositions easy even after it’s tied.

I was so excited about the Vertical Greetings stamp set when it appeared in the Annual Catalogue last year, but I feel like I haven’t made the most of either the cute tree stamps or the vertical greetings, so it was a great opportunity to ink them up!

We decorated the inside of the card too to complement the clean & simple lines of the front (and to use more of the adorable stamps from the Vertical Greetings stamp set!).

TGIF – Emboss Resist Challenge

Good afternoon!  Here is Bunbury, Western Australia it’s cold & wet.  Perfect weather for crafting!!!

While scrolling through Facebook, I saw this gorgeous card by Chloe Evans.  So pretty & inspiring!!

I’m so pleased to be able to call Chloe a friend of mine!!   We both contribute to several shared design teams, and also to some other ones.

One of Chloe’s DT roles is with TGIF – a challenge I’ve often admired, but never jumped in to join the fun!

This week I am!!!  The theme for TGIF#118 is Emboss Resist – a technique I love!

I’ve combined it with another technique I’m currently in love with – ink “smooshing” (or smooching).

This has been floating around for a while and I wish I was quicker on the uptake (we know I’m not though!!!) – because it’s the easiest and most effective watercolouring I’ve ever done.

And for someone that’s had more watercolour fails than successes along the way, it’s like finding an inky oasis in the desert!!!

To get the emboss resist effect, I stamped the trio of stars on the background of Shimmery White cardstock in Versamark, the embossed in clear.  This meant I could “smoosh” as much ink on as I wanted and it wouldn’t take the colour in those places.

There’s lots of tutorials on smooshing – I loved this one by another stamping friend, Jenny Hall.

If you’re adding more than one colour, you need to make sure to allow dry time (or for the impatient crafter like me, help it along with the low setting on your heat tool) between each colour, or they’ll run into each other and ruin your effect!

For this project I used Pool Party, Tempting Turquoise & Dapper Denim.

Lots of plastic surfaces work to transfer the ink, but cello bags were a great option for me!

 

This photo of the star centrepiece also shows up the smooshing colour variation and the embossed stars.

I didn’t purposely set out to make a Christmas card for this challenge, but the last weekend in July seems like a fitting time for one final Christmas in July card!

I do love the Star of Light stamp set – and I’m so glad it appeared in the Annual Catalogue.
